Our students are put into ability groups in mathematics in order to instruct each student at their own skill levels. By doing this, we make sure that we are instructing students using appropriate learning materials, which maximizes each child's ability to learn. Too often, students are either taught materials that are too easy or too difficult. Neither situation is conducive to learning. By using ability grouping, we meet the needs of all learners.
We use our MAPs test (Measure of Academic Progress), produced by the Northwest Evaluation Association (http://www.renlearn.com/) to determine student ability levels, and we use Accelerated Math to help them develop along a path of consistent growth. MAPs examinations are administered three times per year at the beginning of each trimester.
